We now have a vast army of experts, at no cost and in every field imaginable, at our fingertips. We can compare ideas and research. We are no longer restricted to buying locally. We can shop and purchase almost anything over the internet and thanks to the logistics of the internet it can be delivered to our job sites as timely as local delivery, all at the most competitive prices. Today millions of inquiries and purchases are made by construction professionals using their computers.
The next important change that construction professionals need to make is becoming just as proficient at using the business side of Social Networks. I don’t mean using them for chatter but to connect with other construction professionals. Professionals can congregate and share knowledge and experience. These gatherings of professionals are gaining strength every day and in the near future will be as important and indispensable as cell phones are today.
Today while LinkedIn concentrates mainly on employment opportunities there are over seventy-five groups that concentrate on construction, Construction Pros, our group, being one. These groups share information, offer solutions to common problems and bring a form of community to the construction community.
Facebook, like LinkedIn has groups that concentrate on specific industries, like construction. Our group Construction Pros Plus shares knowledge, and seeks to resolve common problems. Also we can post pictures on Facebook, which can’t be done on LinkedIn. Photos personalize the postings and draw people together.
Google+ does not have groups, instead they have communities. This coupled with Google+’s great reach makes it a super platform for social and business networking. A bonus is the ability to add five thousand individuals to your circle of construction business friends with relative ease. Our community Construction Pros is one of the many construction communities on Google+. It is a great platform for discussing new products, ways and means, services, and every kind of new company related to the construction industry. In a short time no construction professional will know how they managed without Google+.
Twitter is a great site where the use of hash marks gets your message to a specific audience with a limit of one hundred forty-four characters. Messages are short and to the point, no time wasted.
These are a few of the social networks out there and as more and more professionals make use of them more information and up to the minute know how will become available.
Blogs have made it possible to develop professional sites that are user friendly and extremely important to niche markets.
Our blog www.elmpost.com, formerly, www.elmcontractorspost.com in addition to weaving our three social networks together offers article like this one which are directed at all construction professionals; free classified ads to everyone in the construction community; construction news and press releases. While we are slightly prejudiced and feel our site is one of the best on the internet concentrating on the construction industry there are many out there. Our aim is to make our site the best one stop blog site for everyone connected with construction. All of this is available 24/7 at each individual’s convenience.
It is my belief that in a short time the social networks of today will evolve into the business networks that will make it possible for anyone who wants success to achieve it through use of all the information that will be available at the click of a key.
If history has taught us anything it is that while change might be difficult it is inevitable and necessary and we owe it to ourselves to take the next step.
